This question is a tribute to something that has helped me and a lot of fellow quizzers.

On a dark office evening,

Sat down in my chair

Sharp smell of stale coffee

Circling round in the air.

Suddenly on the webpage

There came a flickering light.

My head grew heavy, and my sight grew dim;

I had to stop for the night.

There it was in the link list:

"Edit page; you'll do well"

And I was thinking to myself

This could be Heaven or this could be Hell!

Then it lit up the quickbar

And it showed me the way.

There were pages begging for clean-up;

I thought I heard them say:

Welcome to the Hotel X

Such a lovely place

So much empty space

Plenty of work at the Hotel X

Any time of year

You can find us here...

Its structure's maze-passage twisted;

No one knows where it ends.

It's got a lot of money mirror sites,

That it calls friends.

And in the dance of the pages

Editors sweat -

Some change to remember,

Some change to forget.

So I chose Contributions,

Tell me, what have I done?

And it said:

This is all that you've been good for, here,

since two thousand and one.

And still those pages beg changes

From far away,

Keep you up in the middle of the night

Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel X

Such a lovely place

So much empty space

They're typing it in at the Hotel X

Things that you can do—

Revert vandals, too—

Many links in the Portal

Disambigs won't suffice

And users said,

We are all just prisoners here

Of our own device.

And in the Most Requested

The list of pages increased;

They edit with their steely knives

But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember,

I couldn't take any more.

I had to find the passage back

to the life I had before

Relax, said the Rambot,

We are programmed to receive.

You can log out any time you like

But you can never leave.

The X is traditionally made from Y wood, specifically from a variety of White Y (binomial name Salix alba var. caerulea), treated with raw (unboiled) linseed oil. The oil has a protective function. This Y is used as it is very tough and shock-resistant, not being significantly dented nor splintering on the impact of an object at high speed, while also being light in weight. The current design of a cane handle spliced into a willow blade was the invention in the 1880s of Charles Richardson, a pupil of Brunel and the chief engineer of the Severn railway tunnel.

Xs are now made using machines, but a few specialists (6 in England and 2 in Australia) still make hand-made Xs, mostly for professionals. The art of hand-making Xs is known as podshaving.

This man in the photograph is considered one of the most ancient chemists on the world. He and his wife Perenelle were devout Roman Catholics. They were wealthy and were philanthropists. Their wealth was chiefly due to an invention made by the man. He developed this secret from a book named The Book of Abraham the Mage. But, his name mainly shot to fame due to a literary work in 1997. Who is he and what was his invention?

The element with atomic number 137, dubbed untriseptium or eka-dubnium is a hypothetical element never known to have occurred in nature or synthesized in a laboratory. The element's existence is in question due to its drip instabilities. A simplistic interpretation of the relativistic Dirac equation suggests that the element cannot exist as a neutral atom when the atomic number reaches 137. This was first noted by a physicist. Hence this hypothetical element was named after him.

This picture depicts something called Moreton Waves occuring in the sun. Named after the astronomer Gael Moreton, they are basically considered as a coronal shock wave. Now the conspiracy theorists are having a good time, by relating this particular phenomenon with an ancient race and saying it'll cause the doomsday. They consider Moreton Waves to be X that can cause the destruction of Earth. Identify X.

All X are based on the principles of triangulation using the visual images and timing data provided by at least four high-speed video cameras located at different locations and angles around the area. The system rapidly processes the video feeds by a high-speed video processor and Y tracker. A data store contains a predefined model of the playing area and includes data on the rules.

In each frame sent from each camera, the system identifies the group of pixels which corresponds to the image of the Y. It then calculates for each frame the 3D position of the Y by comparing its position on at least two of the physically separate cameras at the same instant in time. A succession of frames builds up a record of the path along which the Y has travelled. It also "predicts" the future flight path of the Y and where it will interact with any of the playing area features already programmed into the database. The system can also interpret these interactions to decide infringements of the rules of the game.

The system generates a graphic image of the Y path and playing area, which means that information can be provided to judges, television viewers or coaching staff in near real time.

The hyperbolic paraboloid is a doubly ruled surface shaped like a saddle. In a cartesian coordinate system, a hyperbolic paraboloid can be represented by the equation

 z = \frac{x^2}{a^2} - \frac{y^2}{b^2}.

This is a hyperbolic paraboloid that opens up along the x-axis and down along the y-axis.

The hyperbolic paraboloid, when parametrized as

 \vec \sigma (u,v) = \left(u, v, {u^2 \over a^2} - {v^2 \over b^2}\right)

has Gaussian curvature

 K(u,v) = {-4 \over a^2 b^2 \left(1 + {4 u^2 \over a^4} + {4 v^2 \over b^4}\right)^2}

and mean curvature

 H(u,v) = {-a^2 + b^2 - {4 u^2 \over a^2} + {4 v^2 \over b^2} \over a^2 b^2 \left(1 + {4 u^2 \over a^4} + {4 v^2 \over b^4}\right)^{3/2}}.

Trying a theme question. Connect the answers as you crack!!

1) Identify the logo.

2) Identify the company started by this man.

3) Who is this modern Gandhian?

4) The X feature is intended to be a "nudge" to attract the attention of another friend. Many users use this feature to attract attention or say "hello" to their friends. An FAQ, by creators of X, gave additional insight into the origin of X, stating: "When we created X, we thought it would be cool to have a feature without any specific purpose. People interpret X in many different ways, and we encourage you to come up with your own meanings." People often reciprocate Xs back and forth until one side gives up, an event known as a "X War".

Identify X

The concept of X is found in almost every human race in one form or the other. University of Florida anthropologist David E.Jones says that certain aspects of X is shared in every culture. He says that even the Inuit, people who dwelled in the Arctic with very little chances to see reptiles have an X like creature in their tales.

He further goes on to say, in his book, Instinct for X, that common characteristics and traits of X and X-like creatures present in different cultures are basically inspired from the characters of the predators of ancient hominids, for instance, great cats, serpents and raptors. He goes against the arguments that X were created by the ancient discoveries and misinterpretations of Dinosaur fossils.

He further proposes that X legends came to existence in different cultures, by the inheritance of the fears of animals like great cats, serpents and reptiles and birds of prey from hominids. He suggests sociological reasons as reasons for the different kinds portrayal of X in various cultures. For instance, X are considered to be bad and evil in European folklore while they are kind and good in the Oriental culture.

Identify X.
