The term "X" was coined by Jorn Barger on 17 December 1997. The short form, "Y," was coined by Peter Merholz, who jokingly broke the word X into the phrase "We Y" in the sidebar of his Y in April or May 1999. Shortly thereafter, Evan Williams at Pyra Labs used "Y" as both a noun and verb and devised the term "Z" in connection with Pyra Labs' Z product, leading to the popularization of the terms.

In August 2006, Technorati found that the most watched Y was that of Chinese actress Xu Jinglie.
